Choosing Between Veneers or Braces – Read this First

Today, dentists have the tools and techniques needed to perfect the appearance and functionality of your teeth. When it comes to improving your smile, you have a plethora of choices to make. However, one question we hear repeatedly is: Should I get veneers or braces?  Let’s explore which treatment option is right for you.

Understanding the Basics: Veneers Versus Braces

Porcelain Veneers

Porcelain veneers are thin shells of material that are attached to teeth. They are purely cosmetic, but they deliver immediate results. You will see your new-and-improved smile as soon as the veneers are in place.

Traditional Braces

Braces are orthodontic devices designed to slowly shift teeth into a more desirable position. Their ability to correct misalignments and gaps means that they can offer both cosmetic and functional benefits. However, it takes months or years to see results. Some braces require cementing metal or ceramic brackets onto teeth. This can limit your diet and make cleaning your teeth more challenging. The Invisalign or Clear Correct systems offer a more flexible form of braces. They use a series of clear, removable plastic aligners to move teeth. This method eliminates many of the restrictions that accompany traditional braces.

How do you choose between Veneers and Braces?

While it’s important to discuss your specific situation with your dentist, there are a few general facts to keep in mind. Veneers deliver quick results. In fact, they’re sometimes called instant orthodontics. However, that speed comes with a price. Veneers are invasive. Placing them requires removing part of the tooth’s surface, and that cannot be undone. In addition, their lifespan is limited. Most veneers will last about a decade before they’ll need to be replaced. However, veneers are generally low maintenance. Caring for them requires little change to your normal oral health care regimen. Generally, patients opt for veneers instead of braces when they want a quick fix, only have cosmetic concerns and aren’t turned off by the thought of removing part of a tooth’s surface.

Braces require more patience, but they don’t cause any harm to your teeth. An additional benefit of braces is they can be used to correct misalignments and other functional issues. While traditional braces involve a fair amount of upkeep and require dietary sacrifices, the option to use Invisalign or Clear Correct means that you can enjoy the benefits of braces without many of the dreaded downsides. Typically, braces are the choice of patients who have alignment issues.
